Guns and survival

Hi all

I thought I'd get this one out in the open from the off as it is often an issue that divides forums and drives people away.

For what it's worth, I think the people on here could loosely be described as the good guys. People with morals and ethics who generally try to do the right thing. Unfortunately from what I've seen, in normal day-to-day life most people seem to have the "me first and sod the rest of you" attitude. I think that would become worse if the situation deteriorates in the way this forum is preparing for. Another factor is that a lot of us on here have families and are probably of the opinion that surviving as a small-holding or extended family farm is the best way forward.

Bearing in mind all of the above, I personally won't be having guns as part of my survival plan. I feel that the best way forward is to find ways to avoid conflict, and to keep out of the way of the bad guys. The reason for this is that with family, I would not be able to win against someone for example who took my child hostage. Or who was prepared to things I'm not. And I don't want to go against my beliefs just to survive, if there's a better way. I believe that given a few months they'll probably shoot each other or run out of stuff to loot and (hopefully) settle down.

What I have found tiresome in the past on other forums is where you get this kind of macho posturing where the poster is trying to persuade everyone else that they could take on anyone left alive in a Mad Max kind of way! I think a sensible discussion of guns, and self-defence and overall protection from the worse elements of society who survive could have a place here, as long as egos are kept in check.

Anyway these are my *very personal* thoughts, what are yours?

Graham

*My* personal view is that guns do have a vital part to play. Shotguns for taking birds, rifles for deer and other livestock. Both for pest control. I also have a couple of very competent and non macho/nutter type firearms guys in my inner circle.

I do however believe that guns in the hands of the inexperienced are 'a very bad idea' tm/

And I very much hope that if things went pear shaped we'd never have to use the content of the gun safe for defence but I'll be honest and say that I would if I had to. To me they are a lot like morphine pain killers - you hope you never, ever have to use them but if you do need them there is nothing else that does the job.

i have to agree with you here, my sentiments also with guns.

i dont like guns, couldnt shoot one, but P does have shotguns for pigeons and pest control.   i suppose my dilema would come into fruition more if the docs are right and i lose him before i should. then what do i do with them?  2 are antiques anyway.

Why don't you get him to teach you how to safely use them? Having the chance to share a skill can only be good for him and if TSHTF it would be a wonderful, lasting gift.

he has tried to show me tarvae But i havnt the strength in my arms to hold it properly, he held it with the butt in my shoulder and standing directly behind me, but it still gave me such a bolt, i was in even more pain than normal, took weeks for the soreness to go Laughing
he was on about getting a smaller one for me to try, funds have depicted otherwise at the moment, but i think it might be a good option, just in case.  ive started feeling more vulnerable again anyway with him being poorly, he always been my protector, has taught me so much with survival aswell, shown me things id never have known how to properly without him.   all of which is also being taught and passed down to J .
